If your father the Duke
has forbidden you to see me
in public
then let us meet under starlight
at the windmill upon the mountain
where the wood owls
make their gothic music.

We shall talk together,
embrace one another,
strictly maintaining
your purity and innocence,
and at least have two hours
each night
before the early dawn light.

And perhaps if we but wait
for a few months longer
in patience together
his mind might be persuaded
to receive a poor man like me
into his Genteel family.
