I've seen the water break
upon a ragged stone
as it descends —
a raging torrent
rushing down
steep crags.

I've seen the stone
stand where it did —
it has ever been the same!

But, down the mountains,
past the stony crags,
the torrent has learnt
to flow — a tamed beast,
winding slowly
an endless tract
of briar wood.

"Sir, I admit your general rule,
That every poet is a fool,
But you yourself may serve to show it,
That every fool is not a poet."
