BEGUILING VINE Print E-mail
(0 votes)

The tree asked "why on me do you climb,"
"To shelter my tender shoots" said the vine.
"You save me from the open terrain,
Where animals trample again and again."

"As you lose all your leaves to winters scorn,
I'll carpet your branches and keep you warm,
My perennial leaves will keep off the bitter dew,
And hold you close till spring flourishes you."

The tree now all year covered in leaves,
Snug together they sway in the breeze.
Together to grow, the vine so quick,
The tree majestic, strong and thick.

The tree remarked "you've cut off my light,
I seem to be dying in perpetual night,
Taking water from my roots and cutting off my air,
It appears I was much better off bare."

The vine replied "I've weaved my charms,
While holding you close in my tentacle arms,
Now in my clutches fully entwined,
I'm the strongest with a dead tree for my spine."

"Good critics, who have stamped out poets' hope, Good statesmen, who pulled ruin on the state, Good patriots, who for a theory risked a cause."
