When a document is opened in an editor it is checked out or in other words locked to prevent the same document being edited by a different person.  The reason for doing so should be reasonably obvious.  If a document gets checked out then left in that state by either closing the browser window or using the back button to get out of the editor only the author or an administrator can open the document to reset it to the normal state.  This is generally only a problem when a document is a collaborated piece of work so should not affect work being done by a single author.  That said, being left in a checked out state could result in the document not displaying correctly in all circumstances so please, only exit the editro by uinsg the Save or Cancel button.
